“What’s this I hear about you working for a single man?” asked Eamon the next morning, after he’d cornered her by the tea kettle when she’d gone for a refill. It was the first chance they had to talk in three weeks, since he’d been out of town.

Erin stood on tiptoe and planted a big, noisy kiss on his cheek. “Nice to see you, too, big bro.”

Eamon pretended to be grossed out, making a big show of wiping the kiss away. “I mean it, Erin. If I’d been in town when you got that interview—”

“But you weren’t,” she told him firmly, popping a piece of cinnamon roll into her mouth. After chewing and swallowing, she said, “And your cohorts in crime went over and interrogated him before I moved in, much to my abject horror, so you have no basis for argument. Besides, he’s a nice guy.”

“Hmph.” Eamon snagged a piece of the communal cinnamon roll and ate it himself. “I’d still like to meet the guy and be the judge of that myself.”

Erin planted her fists on her hips and lifted her chin. “Maybe someday you will, Eam, but only if it happens in the natural course of things. He’s already suffered the O’Grady male presence once. You’re not going to put him—or me—through it again. I’m just starting to get in the groove of the job, and I don’t want you messing it up.”

He frowned. “When did you get so uncooperative?”

“Don’t you trust me, Eam?”

“I do.” He sighed, then pulled her into a hug. “I just want the best for you.”

Erin gave him a squeeze, then pulled away. “I know you do. But, listen. This job isn’t about Sam. It’s about his two-year-old, Jessica.” Okay, so it wasn’t entirely true, but Eamon didn’t need to know that. Over the week, it had become as much about the man as the child.

Eamon’s stony expression eased. “Susan told me what they went through. I’m really sorry about that.”

Erin leaned her hip against the counter. “Yeah. I’m hoping I can help them.”

“If anyone can, sis, it’s you.” Eamon grabbed her around the neck and gave her a giant noogie.

“Cut it out!”

He released her, then bent and kissed her on the cheek. “Just be careful and be smart. And, I’d still like to meet the guy if it ever falls into place.”

“What did the others say about him?”

“I like to draw my own conclusions about a person, Erin.”

“What did they say?” she insisted.

Eamon grumbled under his breath. “They said he seemed like an okay guy.”

“See?”

Eamon jabbed a finger in her direction. “Folks said that about Ted Bundy, too, you know.”

“Ugh!” Erin spun around and headed off. “I’m going to go hang out with the women and children, where people are sane!”

Luckily, Eamon’s interrogation was the sum total of the grilling she received that morning at brunch, much to her surprise. As she drove back to Sam’s, her heart felt light, and her anticipation about dinner had grown. If things went her way,
